Electronic Export Information
The Electronic Export Information (EEI) is a system used by the U.S. government for reporting export shipments. It is typically required for shipments that leave the U.S. and are valued at over $2,500 or require an export license. EEI is submitted through the Automated Export System (AES), which is managed by the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
When is EEI Required?
- EEI is required for any export shipment from the U.S. valued at over $2,500 per Schedule B number.
- EEI is also required for items that are controlled by the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Department of State, or other regulatory agencies that require an export license.
Who must file an EEI?
- The exporter or their agent (such as a freight forwarder or customs broker) is responsible for filing the EEI in the Automated Export System (AES).
- Universities and research institutions exporting goods may need to submit an EEI, especially if they are exporting equipment, research materials, or other goods that meet the criteria.
How to file EEI:
- EEI can be filed electronically through the AES Direct system.
- For export shipments, the exporter or their designated agent must complete an EEI filing before the goods are loaded onto the carrier for export.
Export License Requirements:
- If the goods being exported require a license (such as sensitive technology or data), the EEI submission must include details about the license.
- Failure to comply with EEI reporting requirements or export license regulations can result in penalties or delays.
Exemptions from EEI Filing:
- Some types of exports, such as shipments valued below $2,500 (unless requiring an export license), may be exempt from EEI reporting.
- Certain other exemptions apply, such as basic laboratory supplies and basic office supplies.
