Bonner Projects 

Bonners participate in service hours each week with the charge to win victories for the people of Houston before they graduate. Among many others, they have built educational preparatory programs at nearby schools César Chávez High School, KIPP Intrepid and Lawson Academy middle schools, as well as addressing food insecurity in Houston by providing un-served food, recovered from UH’s dining halls, to the communities at three New Hope Housing locations in Houston

iWISE 

The Writing to Inspire Successful Education (WISE) program was developed in the summer of 2015 with the goal of improving 7 ^th grade writing skills at the nearby KIPP Intrepid Middle School. The Bonners provide in-person and video tutoring to more than 100 students.

The results are impressive. In the 2015-2016 school year, the program saw a more than 10% increase in writing scores on the STARR standardized test. That put Intrepid above the state average for the first time in the school’s history.

LOBO Prep 

The Lobo Prep program at César Chávez High School, a Title I high school near the UH campus, focuses on preparing students for the SAT and college application experience. Working with Chávez administration and teachers, the Bonner students developed an after-school SAT tutoring and preparation program for juniors and seniors where they witnessed increased SAT scores.

The Campus Kitchen at UH 

The Campus Kitchen team delivers, and often serves, high quality meals recovered from UH’s dining halls. This project was the brainchild of five freshmen Bonners. The CKUH project launched in fall 2015, and in its first year of operation recovered and delivered more than 10,000 pounds of food to three low-income housing locations near the UH campus. Money saved on meals can be used for medicine, job training, and other necessities for residents of New Hope Housing. 

The Campus Kitchen team continues to develop and expand the project. In addition to recovering and delivering meals, they are developing nutrition workshops aimed at helping residents create balanced meals on a very fixed budget.
