LPR Cameras Allow for Smoother Gate Entry

This summer, Parking and Transportation Services is rolling out new gate equipment across all parking garages and gated lots at the University of Houston. As part of this upgrade, most garages are being equipped with license plate reader (LPR) technology, offering a faster and more reliable hands-free access experience for permit holders.

At five of the six parking garages, LPRs are replacing the older toll tag readers. When you approach the gate, the system will scan your license plate, verify that it’s linked to a valid parking permit in your myParking account, and automatically raise the gate arm.

This technology has proven to be significantly more efficient, quicker and dependable than the toll tag system.

To ensure smooth access, it’s essential that students, faculty and staff accurately enter their license plate numbers into their myParking account. If your license plate isn’t correctly listed or associated with your permit, the system won’t recognize your vehicle, and you will have to use your physical or digital Cougar Card to get in.

Currently, the Stadium Garage is the only facility not receiving LPRs during this initial phase. While Parking and Transportation Services plans to install readers there in the future, implementation is pending budget availability.

These upgrades are part of a broader effort to modernize campus parking infrastructure and improve the daily experience for the UH community. We appreciate your cooperation and patience as all of these changes are being made.
