During the week of April 8 to April 10, the University of Houston celebrated Adaptive Athletics Week—a vibrant, action-packed series of events dedicated to inclusive recreation and community wellness. Hosted by Campus Recreation and the Justin Dart Jr. Student Accessibility Center, this year’s theme, “Be Well, Do Well,” resonated throughout campus, uniting students and staff through powerful experiences centered around connection, movement, and accessibility.
The week kicked off with the thrilling sport of Goalball, designed for athletes with visual impairments. Players wore blindfolds and relied on sound, focus, and trust to block and score. The atmosphere was electric as students cheered each other on, showcasing determination and team spirit in every round.
Next up was Sitting Volleyball—a fast-paced, high-energy adaptation of the classic game. Played entirely from a seated position, it brought a whole new level of challenge and excitement. Participants quickly discovered the importance of communication, coordination, and agility, making it one of the most engaging highlights of the week.
The grand finale came with multiple games of Wheelchair Basketball, where students and staff joined forces in a series of high-energy matchups. The sound of wheels racing across the court and the roar of the crowd created an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.
“Getting in the chair and playing alongside students was an eye-opening and incredibly fun experience,” said Chris Dawe, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs – Health and Well-being. “Events like this are not only inspiring—they are a reminder of how inclusive recreation can bring people together in powerful ways. I hope to see even more students and colleagues out on the court next year—whether you are playing, cheering, or just curious, there is a place for you in this movement.”
Throughout the week, students registered through the UH Recreation Portal, with accommodation available via the Intramural Sports Office to ensure everyone could participate. Each event was more than just a game—it was a celebration of resilience, accessibility, and community.
Adaptive Athletics Week continues to grow as a signature event at UH, encouraging everyone to step out of their comfort zone and explore the power of inclusive play. With the energy and momentum built this year, the Cougar community is already looking forward to an even bigger, bolder experience next time.
Be Well. Do Well. Move Together. Grow Stronger.
